When we have been in Vienna during our research trip for Vienna Only issue last year, we have visited exterior of Roland Rainer house as well.
Nestled in the serene residential district of Hietzing close to Schönbrunn chateau, the one-storey villa was built by Rainer for his own use during the 1960s. Roland Reiner (1910 - 2004), one of the most prolific Austrian modernist architect, created in his house, hidden in the lush vegetation, compositional masterwork. From the outside, the minimalist brick wall is seen only, while in the garden house is open by floor to ceiling windows connecting interior with the nature.
Fine example of modern Austrian residential architecture is less known work of Roland Rainer who is author of Wiener Stadthalle (1954-1958), Simmering church (1964) or famous 4/5/4 chair (1952), among others.
