We are fall in love with every design which is clever, simple and funny. Work of recent ECAL graduates Bertille & Mathieu has it all.
French-Swiss duo Bertille Laguet and Mathieu Rohrer came together during the studies at Laussanne academy and their common visions resulted in series of modest, yet very entertaining and useful products. "Let's be clear from the start: The iPhone doesn't make us dream. Coffee doesn't grow from capsules. The designer's work isn't about drawing "flavor of the month" objects; It's about maintaining and renewing our gestural and material knowledge," they say about work which they like.
For example, their series Safari including small toys of animals represents perfect connection of well elaborated metal construction with the unorthodox use of material like polyurethane foam which creates realistic shapes of the animals. Another project for kids is Les Pious, series of steel colored drawing tools in different shapes which look like clear abstract elements. Fun and positive activity is one of the main features of the another project, Venice masks. There are paper abstracted face masks of different colors and cut-out paper shapes.
The latest project, which we could see in the annual Wallpaper Graduates directory this year as well, is VentrU radiator made out of cast iron. Organic shape hides hole in between to accommodate blankets, gloves and other accessories to heat or dry. Also the top of the radiator is flat and can be used as a bench. "We dream of objects that subscribe to a long lasting philosophy, that age but age well, coherent with their environment. Objects that suggest a kind presence we grow onto," add designers.
